Mistake 1 — Not Renting a Car 🚗
This is the biggest mistake by far. Most tourists assume they can get around by taxi or bus — and quickly realize how expensive and limiting that is.
Curaçao's best beaches are spread across the entire island. Public transport barely exists, and taxis charge $40–$80 one way to most beaches. A rental car costs roughly the same as one taxi ride — for the entire day.
Mistake 2 — Booking Taxis Without Knowing the Prices
Curaçao taxis have no meters. Prices are negotiated upfront — and tourists who don't know the standard rates often overpay significantly.
Standard taxi prices:
Airport → Willemstad: $40–$50
Willemstad → Grote Knip: $60–$80
Willemstad → Jan Thiel: $25–$35
Always agree on the price before getting in. Better yet — rent a car and skip the taxis altogether.
Mistake 3 — Only Visiting the Easy Beaches
Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach are convenient — but they are not the most beautiful beaches on the island. Most tourists stick to these because they are easy to reach without a car.
The real gems — Grote Knip, Cas Abao, Playa Jeremi, Playa Lagun — are only reachable by car. Don't leave Curaçao without visiting at least one west coast beach.
Mistake 4 — Not Bringing Cash
Many beaches charge a small entrance fee, and smaller restaurants and beach bars often don't accept cards. Always carry $20–$30 in cash for entrance fees, snacks, and tips.
Mistake 5 — Underestimating the Sun
Curaçao is close to the equator — the sun is intense year round. Many tourists get badly sunburned on their first day because they underestimate how strong the UV is.
Use SPF 50 minimum
Reapply every 2 hours
Bring a hat and rashguard for snorkeling
Mistake 6 — Not Booking Activities in Advance
Popular tours — Klein Curaçao day trips, sunset cruises, snorkeling tours — sell out fast, especially during high season (December–April). Don't wait until you arrive to book.
Mistake 7 — Spending Too Much Time in Willemstad
Willemstad is beautiful and worth half a day — but spending your entire trip there means missing the real Curaçao. The island's nature, beaches, and hidden gems are outside the city.
Rent a car, head west, and discover the island beyond the tourist center.
Mistake 8 — Not Snorkeling
Curaçao has some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean. Clear water, colorful coral, sea turtles, and tropical fish — all visible right from the beach. If you don't snorkel, you are missing half the island's beauty.
Best snorkeling spots: Playa Lagun, Playa Kalki, Cas Abao, and Klein Knip.
Mistake 9 — Renting a Car at the Airport Walk-In
If you decide to rent a car (which you should), don't walk up to the airport rental desk without a reservation. Walk-in prices are significantly higher than online booking rates.
Always book online in advance — especially during high season when cars sell out fast.
Mistake 10 — Leaving Without Trying Local Food
Most tourists stick to tourist restaurants and miss the best local spots. Look for:
Govedishi — salted fish with vegetables, a local staple
Keshi yena — stuffed cheese, Curaçao's most famous dish
Fresh fish at Playa Forti — eat with a view of the cliffs
Local snack bars (snèkis) — cheap, delicious, and authentic
How to Save Money in Curaçao
Following these tips will also save you significant money:
Rent a car instead of taking taxis — saves $100+ per day for groups
Visit free beaches — Playa Jeremi, Klein Knip, and Playa Lagun are all free
Buy groceries at a local supermarket for beach days
Eat at local snack bars instead of tourist restaurants
Book all activities online in advance — last minute prices are always higher
Final Word
Curaçao is an incredible island — but only if you explore it properly. Avoid these mistakes, rent a car, and get off the beaten path.
